The Rev. Philip Neal Curran became pastor at Glade in 2010, having been ordained into Christian ministry in 1991 at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in his hometown of Hagerstown, Maryland. Understanding the church to be a dynamic organism that is in a state of constant flux and change, Phil seeks to help the church navigatethe shifting perceptions towards, and realities of, the culture’s understandings of the church. Phil was born and raised in Hagerstown, received an A.A. degree from Hagerstown Community College, and a B.S. degree in political science from Shepherd College (now University) in 1988. Upon his graduation from college, Phil attended Lexington Theological Seminary, and graduated in 1991. While in seminary, Phil met and fell in love with Stephanie Pipes, a native of Indianapolis, Indiana. They were married in 1991 at Woodland Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Lexington. Four years later, they joyously celebrated the birth of their son John.
Phil’s ministry of “pastoral presence” was formed, in large measure, by the student church he served while in seminary and his first “called ministry” in Gibson City, Illinois. It is his understanding of the gospel, however, that has given shape to his interest in, and working for, the removal of barriers that divide.
In his spare time, Phil enjoys being with Stephanie and John, taking a hike in the woods, shooting at the basketball goal or hitting a tennis ball, working on house projects, reading, or riding his bicycle. He has discovered, from various mission and work trips, there is nothing more fulfilling than service to others.
One of his favorite passages of scripture is 1 John 4: 7-8: “Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love.” (NRSV)
